My sister recently returned from a trip to Nepal where she learnt some of the language and told us about their intricate way of defining family members. There is no one size fits all aunt, or a universal uncle. My baby is not just a niece she is a ‘daughter of older sister’, the words strung together like glass beads on a bracelet.
And in Nepali my aunts, my mother’s sisters, are really my ‘little mothers’. How right they are and how wonderful to spend my first official Mothering Sunday in their gorgeous company.
